Course objectives
Coordination compounds. Ligands and their classification. Coordination numbers and stereochemistry of coordination compounds. Bonding in coordination compounds. Ligand-field theory. Isomerism of coordination compounds. Stereochemically nonrigid and fluxional molecules and ions . General periodic trends among transition metals. Group 11-the coinage metals. Group 12-the zinc subgroup. Group 3-the scandium family and rare earths. The lanthanide contraction. Transition metals of group 4-7. Isopoly and heteropolyanions. The iron triad and platinum metals. Multiply bonded dinuclear complexes. Clusters with metal-metal bonds.
