Course objectives
- to raise students' awareness of practices in an English-speaking academic environment
- to identify differences between general and academic English and English for mathematics
- to introduce and practice language in the context of typical genres: mathematical problems, definitions, theorems, proofs
- to practise and extend academic vocabulary and basic specialized vocabulary in the context of mathematics (algebraic operations, sets, geometry, equations, functions, ...)
- to practise language skills and functions typical for natural sciences (e.g. process description, classification, defining, comparing/contrasting, cause-effect), which the students will be able to apply to a narrower/more specific context of their specializations (transferrable skills)
- to practise academic skills, e.g.: presenting yourself and your studies, presenting simple mathematical ideas and problems in public, identifying and formulating main ideas, identifying specific information, text summary, interpretation of information
Learning outcomes
After completing this course the student will be able to:
- talk about their studies and present an academic institution
- understand authentic mathematical texts/lectures identify the main ideas
- interpret the information from mathematical texts/lectures
- discuss about general and mathematical topics
- present simple mathematical topics using basic presentation techniques
- summarize a simple mathematical text
- describe a process, classify, compare and contrast, identify causes and effects
- apply acquired language skills to new topics

Teaching methods
Specialist language course: listening exercises from audio and video sources with accompanying questions and ensuing discussion, reading comprehension of written texts dealing with popular science themes as well as specific scientific texts, describing and comparing, exercises in basic grammar within scientific content and style, word derivation, expansion of casual as well as scientific vocabulary
Assessment methods
continuous assessment through assigned tasks, written credit test - the passing grade is 60%, 80% of seminar attendance is required
