Prerequisites (in Czech)
Požadavky k zápočtu: splnění podmínek kontrolního testu. Test se bude soustředit na probranou část studijní látky s důrazem na vynikající znalost periodizačních systémů, znalost pramenů hmotné kultury a nomenklatury, periodizace a chronologie jednotlivých kulturních celků (včetně odborné literatury).

Course objectives
The aim of the course The Bronze Age and the Halstatt in Central Europe A is an introduction in study of the Elder Metal Age (Bronze Age with reminiscences on the “Copper Age”, Urnfield period, Hallstatt period and Hallstatt-Latène period) of middle Europe. The lectures are conceived, in view of tidy of learned teams, as a commentary to the study literature. Key topics are elaborated and the problematic is analysed. The lecture is a part of the cycle Middle European Prehistory.
Main objectives can be summarized as follows:
to learn the sources of material culture
to understand and be able to explain historical questions and problems of the concrete period
to oriented in special literature and history of single themes
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the study of Later Prehistory. Special literature and the sources of material culture. General characteristic of basic periods of Elder Metal Age. Chronological scheme of of the Bronze Age and the Halstatt Period. Brief history of research.
  • 2. Prehistorical mining. Old cooper mines in Europe. Metallography of non-ferrous metals. Forms of cooper row materials. Cooper artefacts of middleeuropean Eneolithic Period. Discovering and characteristic of bronze. Technology of bronze: metallurgy, metallography and spectroscopy. Hoards and hoarding, composition, interpretation, significance and dating.
  • 3. Environment of Elder Metal Age. Economy. agriculture, crafts, trade and ingots. Social and spiritual culture.
  • 4. Únětice culture, origin, development and chronological schema. Early Únětice culture. Systematic of material culture.
  • 5. Regional groups of Únětice culture.
  • 6. Early Bronze Age in Austria and west Hungary. Straubing culture. Untrerwölbling culture. Wieselburg culture. Kisapostág culture.
  • 7. Early Bronze Age in the Slovakia and Carpathian region. Chlopice-Veselé group. Nitra culture. Hatvan culture. Košťany culture. Mierzanowice culture.
