Course objectives
Students will develop all four skill areas, reading, listening, speaking and writing, for better communication. As they are expected to enter the class at an upper-intermediate level (CEFR B2), they will work on extending the range and accuracy of their language as well as register. They will learn to analyze language for teaching purposes and will be aware of the fact that they are changing their roles - from being the users of the language into being a source of information about the language and language model providers. As an added value to the course, students will focus on and improve key study skills (e.g., organizing study time, critical thinking, dealing with extended texts, writing assignments, etc.).
Syllabus
  • The students will cover the first 4 files from the book New English File Upper Intermediate (see Literature below).

Teaching methods
This class uses a variety of teaching methods such as pair and group work, group class and online forum discussions, presentations, role-plays, and acted-out dialogues. There is also a Mood-Link-A site that provides students with more self-study materials.
Assessment methods
Students will have to register for two different seminar groups, for a total of 4 hours every week. The two groups will be with two different teachers.
Since this is a practical language course, attendance is expected. The department sets the level of attendance at 80%, so it is suggested that students not miss more than 3 classes.
Throughout the semester there will be various tasks that make up the Continuous Assessment. The specific tasks will be different for each teacher.
The continuous assessment will be based on work done in class with the book New English File Upper Intermediate as well as out-of-class assignments.
Students are also expected to study the book English Grammar In Use in their own time.
The final test will consist of evaluation of the students grammar and vocabulary based on the course book as well as general reading (FCE level), writing and listening sections. A test of speaking will also be administered with a pass mark 70 points.
The general pass mark for this course is 70% which includes both the Continuous Assessment and the final test.
