Course objectives
The purpose of the course is to experience, on material from one specific field of expertise, the dependence of a translator's competence on thorough understanding of the subject. The course involves a very strong practical part - in addition to dealing with texts, we will also do practical work in photography. The understanding of concepts such as pinhole camera, exposure, speed, noise, depth of field - to name just a few examples - will be acquired by doing, instead of just learning the equivalents. This represents a model of what should, ideally, be always part of the translator's activity.
In addition to the technical aspects of photography, we will also touch upon the aesthetically oriented text on the subject, including theory, art criticism etc.
After completing the course, the student will
  • have experienced the importance of deeper knowledge of the field when reproducing technical texts: mastering the terminology and essence of the problems will be based on hands-on contact with the area, in this case practical photographing and discussing the pictures and technical problems;
  • know the terminology of classical as well as digital photography;
  • be able to recognize and produce the varied style levels found in texts from the field;
  • be able to apply this knowledge in translating texts dealing with the presence and past of photography from the technical as well as the artistic points of view

    • Basic concepts in photography - English and Czech terminology. Understanding a problem as a condition of creating good texts/translations: practical experimenting with selected phenomena.
    • The way from analog to digital photography.
    • Two aspects of the field: technology-oriented vs. art-oriented texts.
    • The range of technological texts: from practical guides to theoretical fundaments.
    • Existing terminological dictionaries, glosaries, and other resources.
    • Some conceptual differences in naming between English and Czech.
    • Compiling our own glossary, including illustrative photos.
    • Individual talks on various phenomena or aspects of photography.
    • Terminology and texts in neighbouring fields (applied photography: journalism, web publishing, photography in documentary and archival purposes).
    Teaching methods
    Individual and group photo projects/presentations; practical work at home and in class, discussion of the results. Individula work in translating and termonology collection.
    Assessment methods
    Team and individual projects, final translation and contribution to joint terminological collection.
