Cíle předmětu
The course focuses on London as not only political but also a cultural metropolis. Supported by self-studies, home reading, guided reading experience (see The Reader) and class discussions, students are encouraged to read and critically comment on the role of London in English literature, its influence on the literary and cultural imagination from the 17th century to the middle of the 20 century and beyond. In the end of the course, students students should be able to DISCUSS works of selected British authors related to London; IDENTIFY the main artistic conventions and theories underlying selected texts of fiction and poetry, and ANALYSE the texts in order to understand relevant artistic and period features. The course is an extention of lectures in British history and British literature.

Class discussions on assigned readings, individual and group presentations, homework that entails reading and writing short response papers.
Metody hodnocení
Evaluation, credits: 80% attendance, regular home reading and activity in class, discussions, a short presentation on specific aspects of English literature related to London. Colloquy: Discuss the picture of London in two required novels you have read. Focus on all possible aspects (see the topics of seminars).

Required reading: 1) Short texts from the reader and moodlinka, from week to week. 2) Two novels, full length. One of them represents the 19th century writing and is by Charles Dickens (same as your choice for the lectures). The other represents writing of the first half of the 20th century and its story is located in London, or touches the Thames. Here you have the choice of: Joseph Conrad: The Heart of Darkness (1902), G.B.Show: Pygmalion (19013), Virginia Wolf: Mrs Dalloway (1925), Aldous Huxley: Brave New World (1932), George Orwell: 1984 (1949) Recommended academic support: Same as in lectures.
