There are no prerequisites for this course. This course is open to all students without any prior conditions. The course is recommended for students with good command of English language (CEFR level C1).

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to increase the competitive advantage of the students on the job market and improvement of their communicative skills.
Through the careful analysis of the selected variety of video clips (news reports, TV dramas, TV sitcoms) from the US and UK media, the students will understand the specific forms of the English language used for different types of discourse.
At the end of the course, the students will be able to understand the main differences between the US and UK English used in the certain media (news reporting and entertainment TV programs).
The students will also be able to apply the acquired information in everyday discourse and to prepare an individual presentation using the right register.
Syllabus
  • work with the authentic and contemporary audiovisual materials from British and American media
  • identification of the communication tools in the sphere of journalism and popular TV shows of various genres
  • work with journalistic materials by commenting on the chosen authentic topical events in two British and two Amerian media.
  • assessing the differences in the language tools used in media, register, depth of insight and interaction of the presenters
  • communicative English in the various social contexts
  • individual work with the chosen audiovisual material
  • presentation of the materials dealt with in the seminar

Teaching methods
The classwork will include viewing and listening to authentic audio-visual material, homework, class discussions, individual presentations and group projects.
Assessment methods
Class attendance is mandatory, students may miss maximum of 2 classes but not more; 1 group presentation; 1 individual presentation; a final project (written analysis of an assigned video clip).
