Course objectives
The course aim is to get the basic knowledge of biochemical processes in the human body.
Syllabus
  • Biochemistry for bacherols follows secondary school chemistry and broadens the subject considerably to the level required for the study of successive subjects. There are covered the basic principles of chemistry as well as the survey of biochemically important inorganic and organic compounds. A special attention is paid to the structures and chemistry of saccharides, lipids, steroids, amino acids, proteins, nucleotides, and nucleic acids. Biochemical part deals with the metabolism of nutrients including biochemistry of muscles and vision.
  • Atomic structure. Chemical bonds.
  • Latin nomenclature.
  • Chemical reactions. Basic chemical calculations.
  • Solutions. Acids and bases. Osmotic pressure.
  • Redox reactions. Adsorbents, detergents.
  • Biochemically important elements and their compounds.
  • Organic compounds. Hydrocarbons. Alcohols, phenols, ethers.
  • Carbonyl compounds. Carboxylic acids and their deivatives.
  • Nitrocompounds, amines, heterocycles and their biochemically important derivatives.
  • The chemistry of saccharides.
  • Aminoacids, peptides, proteins. Biocatalysis. Types of enzymes, enzyme nomenclature.
  • Lipids, phospholipids, glycolipids. Eicosanoids, steroids.
  • Nucleosides and nucleotides, types of nucleic acids.
  • Hemoproteins. Heme. Bile pigments.
  • General principles of metabolism. High-energy compounds. Citric acid cycle. Respiration chain, aerobic phosphorylation.
  • Saccharide metabolism, glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, synthesis of glycogen.
  • Metabolism of proteins and amino acids. Proteins in food and their digestion. Synthesis of urea.
  • Digestion and resorption of lipids. Fatty acid metabolism, ketogenesis. Cholesterol.
  • Hormones, mechanism of their action. Neurone, neurotransmitters.
  • Muscle proteins, molecular principles of contraction and relaxation.
  • Metabolism of xenobiotics.
  • Biochemistry of vision, rhodopsine cycle. Metabolism of the cornea and the lens.
