Course objectives
The course provides a short survey of basic phenomena of Modern Greek phonology, morphology and syntax and introduces the basic lexicon of Modern Greek language within the scope of lessons 1 to 10 of the textbook of Epikinoniste ellinika. At the end of the course, students will be familiar with basic linguistic terminology concerning Modern Greek and they will be capable of explaining the grammatical phenomena which are dealt with and of understanding simple texts focused on given topics.

  • Modern Greek phonetics, the alphabet
  • Lessons 1, 2: vocabulary: greetings, introducing,; grammar: definite and indefinite article, verb to be – present tense, personal pronouns – nominative of singular and plural, basic numerals 1 – 10
  • Lessons 3, 4: country of origin, address, profession; masculine nouns ending in -os, -is, -as, feminine nouns ending in -a, -i, neutral nouns ending in -o, -i, -ma – nominative and accusative singular, prepositional phrases, verbs of 1st conjugation, possessive pronouns
  • Lesson 5: languages, family; verbs of 2nd conjugation
  • Lessons 6, 7: general revision, prices; demonstrative pronouns, weak form of personal pronouns – genitive singular
  • Lessons 8, 9: nationality, age; masculine adjectives ending in -os, -a/-i, -o – nominative and accusative singular, interrogative pronoun who, irregular verbs
  • Lessons 9, 10: expressing an opinion; verbs ending in -ome
  • Lessons 10: time, days of the week; verbs of 2nd conjugation, verbs ending in -ame

The course has a form of a seminar.
Assessment methods
Homework is required during semester – students prepare assigned grammatical exercises and short translations from Modern Greek into Czech and vice versa. Requirements for obtaining the credit: passing a written test.
