Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to explain and analyse contemporary topics of the extreme left on the level of ideology, program analysis and organizational structure in the Czech Republic since 1989. It deals with the types of organizations active on the radical left, topics, objectives and their methods. Students should be able discuss the doctrines of radical left, knowledge of the structure of the Czech extreme left and particular organizations, their objectives and activities.
Syllabus

  • 1. Introduction to the course, organizational matters.
  • 2. Assignment of the paper topics, theories of extremism, the left, the right, topics, development of terms.
  • 3. Marxism.
  • 4. Anarchism.
  • 5. Situation in the Czech Republic at the beginning of the 1990’s. Left alternative. Division into a revolutionary Marxist and an anarchist streams.
  • 6. Czech Anarchist Association. Czechoslovak Anarchist Federation. Solidarity.
  • 7. Federation of Social Anarchists. Antifascist Action. Federation of Anarchist Groups.
  • 8. Street parties. Movement with anarchist background against the economic globalization (INPEG). Food not bombs. Other organizations and initiatives.
  • 9. Socialist Solidarity. Budoucnost.
  • 10. Socialist Organization of Workers. REVO. KSM. Relationships of Trotskyist organizations with KSČM.
  • 11. Movements with revolutionary Marxist backgrounds against the economic globalization (Stop IMF, Globalize the Resistance). Czech Social Forum. Other organizations and initiatives.

Assessment methods
The subject is taught in the form of a lecture and a seminar.
Students have to present a paper in order to be allowed to pass the exam. The course is concluded by a final exam. Maximum of 100 points can be obtained at the exam. Evaluation: 0-59 = F, 60-68 = E, 69-77 = D, 78-86 = C, 87-94 = B, 94-100 = A.
