Course objectives
After ending this course the nutritional therapist should: - have a logical approach to nutrition problem solving from biochemical point of view - judge of impact the given composition and quantum of food in a healthy person - understand the changes in metabolism in some diseases/disorders - combat the abundance intake of energy according to nutritional habits - assess the dietary „advices“ and diets „systems“ very popular with some magazines - know main necessities of nutrition in disease prevention and patient care
Syllabus
  • Laboratory tests in clinical biochemistry. Sources of error, assessing the significance of a test result. Enzyme assays in clinical diagnostics. Conversions and absorption of food components in gastrointestinal tract. Biochemical processes in the mouth, stomach, small and large intestine. Essential enzymes and hormones acting in GIT. Metabolism of enterocyte. Biochemistry of pankreas. Glucose in blood (origin, consumption, regulation). Diabetes mellitus. Disturbances of fructose and galactose metabolism. Investigations of glucose metabolism. Proteins in nutrition. Assessment of quality. Absorption of amino acids, utilization of amino acids in tissues, blood transport of ammonia, glutamine and its role in metabolism. Excretion of nitrogen compounds by urine. Nitrogen balance. Plasma lipoproteins, interconversion of lipoproteins. Cholesterol transport, balance of cholesterol intake and excretion. Ways affecting the plasmatic level of cholesterol. Integration of metabolism of nutrients: relationships among the major metabolic pathways in the fed state, postabsorptive state, prolonged starvation. Metabolism in stress conditions, muscle work. Obesity. Malnutrition. Principles of xenobiotics biotransformation. Metabolism of ethanol. The liver functions – the role in metabolism of nutrients, hormones, and vitamins. Catabolism of hemoglobin, urobilinoids, the types of hyperbilirubinemia. Biochemická investigations of liver function. Principles of neurotransmitter and hormone effects. Types and structures of receptors. Regulation of metabolism. Metabolism of nervous tissue. Processes on synapses. The major proteins of blood plasma, function. Metabolism of iron and copper. Biochemistry of blood cells. The blood-coagulation cascade, inhibition of clotting. Significance of folate and B12, vitamins K.

Teaching methods (in Czech)
Výuka probíhá formou semináře. V seminářích probíhá diskuze k zadaným otázkám a tématům.
Assessment methods
• Full (100%) attendance in seminars is the principal condition. If any absence, it must be apologized through Department of Study Affairs up to five days. If apology is recorded in Information System (IS), then student is allowed to make up the absence according to teacher's instructions. • Three revision tests are written in seminars, semestral limit for credit is 52/75 If the semestral limit is not fulfilled, student must write the Credit test (limit 14/30). All absences must be made up before writing the credit test. One repetition of the Credit test is approved
