Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to acquaint the students with the history from the coming of the Slavs until the end of the 15th in Moravia, with regard to the surrounding countries; at the end of the course the students should be able to: name and define the periodization and individual phases of the Medieval Moravia; explain the changes in various phenomena and define their reflection in funerary rites; discuss the reflection of funerary rites in the archeological sources; describe the lifestyle and ways of living of people in various periods and social groups; apply the theoretical knowledge in communication and cooperation with archeologists.

  • 1. The beginnings and periodizations of the Middle Ages. The Middle Ages man and his understanding of the world. The space and time. Paganism and Christianity.
  • 2. The beginnings of the Slavonic settlement. The Avars and the Slavs. The empire of Samo. The settlements and the material culture in the 6th and 8th century. Funerary rites
  • 3. The Great Moravian empire. The political history, economical level. Rural settlements and the centers of power. The system of castles. Religious architecture. Funerary rites.
  • 4. Morava in the 11th and 12th centuries. The political history, economical level. Rural settlements and the centers of power. The system of castles. Religious architecture. Funerary rites.
  • 5. The rural areas in the 13th till 15th centuries. Agriculture and its changes. Colonization. The village, the house, the estate. The ways of living - the rural inhabitants. Defunct villages
  • 6. The town in the 13th till 15th centuries. Towns and their origin. The trade, crafts and mining of raw materials. The relationships of native and german inhabitants. The ways of living - the inhabitants of towns.
  • 7. The sovereign and the aristocracy in the 13th till 15th centuries. Social stratification. Ways of living.
  • 8. The religious institutions in the 13th till 15th centuries. Organization. The parochial management. Churches. Monasteries. Ways of living - friars.
  • 9. Excursion in the Moravian Museum - Slavic period
  • 10. Excursion in the Moravian Museum - the Middle Ages
  • 11. Excursion to Brno historic city center - the city walls, the town-hall, the oldest church buildings (Petrov), the Brno Castle (Špilberk)

Teaching methods
Theoretical preparation in form of lectures is complemented with excursions to significant moravian museums. The course includes the elaboration of a semestral paper on topic related to Medieval Moravia ranging 8-10 pages.
Assessment methods
The course is concluded by an exam, after elaborating an essay (seminar paper) ranging 8-10 pages. Exam includes a written test (free answer) and an oral exam. After completing the admission test (75 % successful answers required) an oral exam (in form of discussion) follows on the topic of one of the selected individual areas covered in the course.
