Course objectives
The cours provides an overview of xenobiotic effects on important poikilothermal vertebrates (fish, amphibians, reptiles) and insight into the relationshpip with environmental contamination. Students will be introduced into (i) biochemical mechanisms of xenobiotics in vertebrates; (ii) physiological changes and parameters indicating early intoxication - biomarkers; (iii) methods of toxicology and ecotoxicology with pokilotherms; (iv) results of laboratory and field studies on effects of important toxic compounds on fish, amphibians and reptiles.
Syllabus
  • 1) biology and physiology of poikilotherms related to toxicology; 2) basic principles and approaches in toxicology, acute and chronic toxicity, dose-response curve evaluatino, specific aspects; 3) toxokinetics and toxodynamics, metabolism, detoxication in poikilotherms; 4) cellular and biochemical mechanisms of xenobiotics in poikilotherms (metals, organic contaminants, reactive molecules, gases); 5) bioindication of environmental contamination using fish - biomarkers in vivo and in situ, amphibians as biomarkers; 6) toxicity of xenobiotics - effects in vivo, immunosuppresion, developmental and embryo- toxicity, ecological and ecotoxicological impacts; 7) laboratory methods I - biochemistry, in vitro cellular studies; 8) laboratory methods II - in vivo studies with adults and life stages; 9) methods III - populational studies, biomonitoring; 10) overview of effects of major xenobiotics (metals, POPs, municipal effluents, chlorine industry, radioactivity); 11) economic and ecological importance of poikilotherm toxicology - prediction of effects, risk assessment, standards
