Course objectives
The laboratory course is designed to introduce the student to the principles and practices of clinical chemistry. Through laboratory experiences the student will develop the necessary skills to perform analytical procedures and evaluate laboratory data. The exercises familiarize the student with the performance of simple laboratory tests common in health care centers.

At the end of the course students should be able to:
understand basic principles of basic analytical parameters determination in blood serum and urine;
determine basic biochemical parameters in serum and urine;
interpret measured results in context of potential health/disease
Syllabus
  • Phases laboratory tests, errors, basic concepts of metrology. Factors influencing the outcome of the examination. Diagnostic efficiency of the laboratory tests.
  • Blood collection and processing of blood. Evaluation of the results of laboratory tests. The enzymes in clinical diagnosis.
  • Determination of cholesterol (total, HDL, LDL) in the blood and serum. The calculation of LDL-cholesterol and derived parameters. Enzymatic determination of glucose in serum and blood. The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Determination of glycated hemoglobin HbA1c.
  • Determination of catalytic concentration of enzymes in serum   (ALT / AST, ALP, CK, CK-MB).
  • Determination of nitrogen metabolites in serum   (bilirubin, uric acid, urea). Approximate evaluation of nitrogen balance.
  • Determination of total protein, serum albumin. Electrophoresis of serum proteins and lipoproteins. Detection of C-reactive protein by agglutination test. Determination of IgE in the serum by ELISA.
  • Objective and physical examination of urine. The urine test strips. The determination of creatinine in serum and urine. Creatinine clearance and estimation of GFR. The calculation of resorption and excretion fraction of water. Proteinuria and detection of Bence Jones protein. The immunonephelometric determination of microalbuminuria.
  • Detection of uric acid. Approximate chemical analysis of urinary calculi.
