Course objectives
The course aims to introduce undergraduates to the utility of organometallic chemistry, a discipline of importance to scientists and technologists in a variety of industry sectors. The main focus will be on the synthesis and reactivity of organometallic compounds of the main group and transition metals, supported by discussion of structure and bonding and their implications. The aim, on completion of the course, is that a student will be equipped to recognize the key classes of organometallic compounds, their methods of characterization, possible synthetic routes and anticipated reactivity.
Syllabus
  • 1. Historical development, general features of organometallic compounds, bonding types. General synthetic methods of main-group organometallics and their reactivity. 2. Organometallics of groups 1 and 2 (Grignard reagents). 3. Organometallics of group 13 (organoboranes, organoboron halides and hydrides, carboranes, borinic and boronic acids, organoaluminium compounds). Organometallics of group 12. 4. Organometallics of group 14 (organosilicon, organotin and organolead compounds), organometallics of group 15 (compounds with As-C, Sb-C and Bi-C bonds). 5. Organometallic compounds of the transition elements, general trends, preparation, reactivity. Compounds with one-electron donor ligands (sigma-alkyl, aryl, acyl; sigma-alkenyl, sigma-alkynyl compounds). 6. Organometallic compounds with two-electron donor ligands (metal carbonyls, carbonyl metal hydrides and halides, thiocarbonyl metal complexes, isocyanide complexes, carbene and olefin complexes). 7. Organometallic compounds with three-electron donor ligands (allyl, cyclopropenyl and carbyne complexes). Compounds with four-electron ligands (butadiene and cyclobutadiene complexes). 8. Organometallic compounds with five-electron donor ligands (metallocenes). 9. Organometallic compounds with six-electron donor ligands (arene complexes), with seven- and eight-electron donor ligand s. Acetylene complexes. 10. Principal reaction types in chemistry of transition metal organometallics (olefin coordination, substitution reactions, oxidative additions and reductive eliminations, insertions and deinsertions, reactions of coordinated ligands). 11. Utilization of transition metal organometallics in catalysis (alkenes and alkynes polymerization and oligomerization, syntheses using carbon monoxide). 12. Hydroformylation, olefin and methanol oxidation, water-gas shift reaction, hydrogenation. 13. Homogenous organometallic catalysis (acetic anhydride, adiponitrile, aromatic polycarbonates). 14. Organometallics in biochemistry, microbiology and medicine.
