Course objectives
At the end of the course, the students will be able: 1 – to read a simple Old Slavonic/Slavic text in the Cyrillic alphabet and convert it into the Roman alphabet; 2 – to understand a simple Old Slavonic/Slavic text when using a dictionary; 3 – to detect and evaluate the Old Slavonic/Slavic roots of literary, cultural and civilization values of the contemporary Czech society. The literature of the Church Slavonic. The mission of Constant and Method. Church Slavonic literature in the Czech. Cloister of Emausy. Fundamental phonology and morphology changes during the development the Proto-Slavonic language. Phonology and morphology changes as a moment of separating of the Slavic languages (Czech, Slovak, Polish, Russian). The grammatical system of the Church Slavonic. Application of the theoretical knowledge by reading the texts of the Church Slavonic.
Syllabus
  • 1. The literature and culture of the Church Slavonic. 2. Development of the phonological and morphological system of Church Slavonic and Proto-Slavonic compare to the Indo-European proto-language and to the contemporary Slavic languages. 3. Grammatical system of the Church Slavonic. 4. Reading of the Church Slavonic texts written by Cyrillic and their translation. 5. Phonological and morphological analysis of the Church Slavonic texts.

Teaching methods
A seminar, active analytical students´ work in the analysis of Old Church Slavonic texts, active synthetic students´ work in the interpretation of linguistic phenomena, discussion about the professional course issues.
Assessment methods
For a successful completion of the course, the students should: 1. complete a written test, where they freely formulate their answers and questions. The test is scored. Students must obtain at least an absolute majority of points. 2. For a successful completion of the course, a seminar paper should be submitted – a paper on the chosen topic.
