It is pressupposed the student has succesfully finished the subject CJ2BP_JSy1 (Syntax of the Czech Language I).

Course objectives
Contemporary Czech Syntax II follows the Contemporary Czech Syntax I.; the analysis of the compound sentence follows the analysis of the sentence.
That is pressupossed the students after finishing the course are able:
(a) to analyse compound sentences and complex sentences;
(b) to know the types of the clauses in compound and complex centences;
(c) to identify the relationships among the clauses in all types of compound and complex sentences;
(d) to interprete relationships among sentences in the text.
Syllabus
  • 1. Criteria for the differentiation between sentence, complex sentence and compound sentence.
  • 2. Sentences in the compound sentence. Connectives (word category, syntactical function, meaning).
  • 3. Sentence and clause in the complex sentence.
  • 4. Types of the compound sentence.
  • 5. Co-ordination in the compound sentence. Types of the semantic function of the co-ordination, the connective of the co-ordination. Co-ordination of the sentences, co-ordination of clauses.
  • 6. Subordination in the complex sentence.
  • 7. Classification of the clauses. Clause in the valence position of the predicative verb in the sentence - head-clause.
  • 8. Compound sentence and complex sentence with complicated structure.
  • 9. Graphical scheme of the compound sentence and complex sentence.
  • 10. Some irregularities in the structure of the sentence.
  • 11. Functional perspective of the sentence. Word-order.

Teaching methods
- Textual analysis oriented to semantic relationships among sentences;
- Analysis of compound and complex sentence, discussion on special problems; problem methods connected with methods of critical thinking;
- Controlled discussion oriented to elimination of mistakes.
Assessment methods
Seminary course
Ending: Credit
Credit requirements: Written test that includes themen of the subject CJ2BP_JSy2 (see syllabus)
The test includes 30 elementary questions focused to complex and compound sentence. To be successfull student has to answer 80 % of them correctly.
