Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to introduce students to the development of youth literature, including the main genres of literature for children and youth as well as significant authors. The lecture in the form of selected topics covers the production in Czech literature for children and youth from the beginning till these days. The topics are organised into sections of poetry, prose (exile literature included) and a brief outline of secondary literature. It also brings an outline of the most significant genres of literature for children and young adults. Students will be able to explain the development of literary trends and movements in the particular period of Czech literature. They will be able to identify and analyse the style of outstanding literary personalities of the period. They will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies.

  • The beginnings of literature for youth (LFY) and their preconditions in the context of Czech literature - LFY during the National Revival, the beginnings of genre differentiation, the role of folklore in children’s and youth reading, problematic nature of a folklore tale - development of poetry for children and youth in the nineteenth century - LFY from the beginning of the twentieth century to the year 1945 - LFY from 1945 to the late 1950s, discontinuity in its development after 1945, new editorial policy of SNDK (Children’s Books State Publishing House) - LFY in the 1960s, stratification of values in works for children and youth - LFY in the period of normalization - metamorphosis of LFY from the 1990s to the present - the latest news in the field of Czech and world literature for youth

Teaching methods
Students will get an insight into the basic trends of literature for young adults in the respective period, as well as into the specific nature of the poetics of individual literary movements. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities, significant for a particular period. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in the classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Students will present outcomes of their work in written form which will help them to enhance their ability to think critically and develop their individual style. Emphasis is put on students’ ability to evaluate a particular literary piece, compare it in the context of the contemporary Czech and world literary production and defend and formulate their views with precision and professional insight. Course is concluded with a credit. Requirements: A review of a work of a Czech writer for children and youth published after the year 2014 (included).
