Course objectives
This subject is an introduction to the problematic nature of teaching literature at primary schools. Having met the course requirements, students will be able to understand and explain the process of literary communication, recall theoretical aspects of didactic interpretation and apply them in practice. They will be able to classify a whole spectrum of teaching materials and evaluate them using a range of criteria for assessment.
Syllabus
  • 1. Characteristics of the didactics of literary education as a science, basic literature. 2. Basic aspects of teaching literature, process of reception, literary communication. Functional, literary and cultural "literacy". 3. Nature of primary school pupils´reading competence; knowledge and skills acquired at primary school. 4. Interpretation of a literary text in theory and practice. 5. Interpretation of selected prose, poetry and dramatic texts. Didactic aspects of interpretation, partial methods of interpretation,didactic interpretation as a problem-solving method, the role of interpretation in a teacher´s lesson plan. 6. Contemporary readers for the higher classes of primary schools and other didactic materials. Conception of textbooks, contents, layout, features of management, nature of mothodological manuals etc. Ways and aspects of evaluation of the readers. Adjusting teaching materials to particular educational strategies of the subject, creating one´s own teaching materials. 7. Methods of literary-didactic research, research in primary school pupils´reception and preferences. Implementation of the results in the teaching practice. The most important part of the seminars is the direct interpretation of particular texts as a key part of the preparation of a literarure teacher. Equally important is a detailed knowledge of the vast selection of textbooks and other supplementary didactic texts.

Teaching methods
Type of course: seminar. Methods: theoretical preparation, active students´ work in the analysis of texts and textbooks, discussion about the professional course issues.
Assessment methods
Type of course: seminar. Type of completion: credit. Credit requirements: written assignment - evaluation of a chosen set of textbooks (readers, anthologies and other didactic material)for any of the 5th-9th year of primary schools from the point of view of basic parameters, contents (verbal and non-verbal aspects) and layout (features of management and orientation) of a particular textbook, on micro-level selected aspects only. Detailed requirements are available in Study Materials of the course in the Information System MU, the folder Learning Materials. Active participation in seminars.
