Course objectives
Czech literature of the second half of the 19th century represents a significant period of the history of Czech literature. The course introduces students to the most significant personalities and works of the studied period, including also the cultural and social context. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more effectively. They will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies.

  • 1. Introduction to the studies of literature of the second half of the 19th century. 2. Basic aspects of the development of literature in the second half of the 19th century, understanding the main stages of the development. 3. Development of democratic literature. 4. Differenciation of Czech literature in the last 25 years of the 19th century.

Teaching methods
In the form of a lecture (presentation, discussion), students will use and enhance their knowledge of literary trends and movements in Czech literature of the studied period. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities of Czech poetry and prose. They will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more effectively. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Students will present outcomes of their work in written form which will help them to enhance their ability to think critically and develop their individual style. Emphasis is put on students’ ability to defend and formulate their views with precision and professional insight. The seminar will be concluded by a colloquy. Credit reguirements also contain a written reflection (about three Word pages long) dealing with one of the topics covered in lectures, based on additional reference resources and fiction.
