Course objectives
The aim of the course is to inform the undergraduates about the external history of the Czech language (including the language situation in the Common Slavonic / Proto-Slavic and Latin periods); development of the description and codification of the Czech language, development of stylistic stratification of the Czech language; conception of the literary language especially according to Prague linguistic school theory.
Syllabus
  • Literary languages on our territory before the origins of literature written in the Czech language. Latin and Old Church Slavonic/Slavic literature The Chronica Bohemorum by Cosmas of Prague, Old Church Slavonic legends and others. 2 Czech in the 12th and 13th centuries. The first legal and literary texts. Graphic realization of the first Czech texts. Difficulties of the primitive orthography. 3 Evolution of Czech in the 14th century. Old Czech manuscripts and their stylistic differentiation. Comparison of the manuscripts written in Czech in the 13th and 14th centuries. Comparison of the language characteristics of the manuscripts with different styles (the Manuscript from Hradec Králové vs. legends; Legend of Saint Procopius vs. Legend of Saint Catherine of Alexandria).Vocabulary of the Czech language as a reflection of the social situation. 4 Old Czech dictionaries. Klaret and his company. Vocabulary in Klarets dictionaries, the initial attempts at Czech terminology. Jan Hus and his contribution to the Czech language. 5 The developed Czech language of the Humanistic epoch, its stylistic differentiation. Syntactic characterization of the Humanistic manuscripts. The orthography of the Bohemian Brethern. Stylistic differentiation of the Czech texts of the Humanistic epoch. 6 Grammar works of the 16th century. The Grammar of Náměšť. Jan Blahoslav, characteristic features of his work, especially his grammar books. Dictionaries. 7 The period after the battle of White Mountain and the problems of its evaluation. The so-called Baroque Czech, the Baroque literary manuscripts. The Czech grammar books of the 17th and 18th centuries, their contribution and critiques. The purification attempts and their evaluations. 8 J. Dobrovský and his linguistic work. Codifications, disputes between y-supporters and i-supporters. V. Hanka. J. Jungmann work CzechGerman Dictionary. Fine literature. 9 Language codification in the period of purification of the 19th century. The so-called Matice Purifications. Creation of period special terminology. 10 The care of the literary language at the end of the 19th century and in the half of the 20th century (J. Gebauer, V. Ertl). The beginnings of Czech stylistics. Prague linguistic school and its representatives. The theory of the literary language by B. Havránek. The development of professional interest in the Czech language. 11 Czech studies and their development in the second half of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century. The important representatives B. Havránek, A. Jedlička, V. Šmilauer, F. Kopečný, F. Daneš and others. Czech studies - the important works, the grammar books, dictionaries. Linguistic magazines/jounals. Czech studies abroad.
