Course objectives
At the end of the course, a participant is supposed to:
– be able to use knowledge of writing borrowed words in practice (s and z in particular words, marking the length of vowels, writing ú and ů in original source and borrowed words);
– know how to write university degrees and marks behind numbers;
– understand the difference between the hyphen and dash;
– be able to use the stated knowledge of writing hyphens and dashes in particular examples;
– be able to look up information in a linguistic reference book, in case of doubts.
Syllabus
  • 1. Writing borrowed words. Writing s and z in particular borrowed words. Marking the length of vowels in borrowed words. Writing ú and ů in original source and borrowed words.
  • 2. Abbreviations and marks. Writing university degrees. Difference in writing a space between a number and a mark. Type 10 km = ten kilometres. // 10km = ten-kilometre-long.
  • 3. Writing the hyphen. Type Novotná-Jedličková, Brno-Bystrc.
  • 4. Writing the dash. Type opening hours 8–16, match Sparta–Slavia, pair of travellers Zikmund–Hanzelka.

Teaching methods
There will be a brief lecture including presentation of particular examples at the beginning of each discussed issue.
The main part of the lessons will be devoted to practice of particular examples of the discussed issues of lexical orthography.
Self-study: the participants will be given a set of texts for practising particular features of lexical orthography including the key.
Assessment methods
Individual testing.
Checking of the skills will be accomplished via test; the participants will verify their level of the acquired skills via this test. Successful mastering of the course subject content is preconditioned with 85% success in the test.
