Course objectives
At the end of the course, students will: 1. become conscious of main tendencies in the contemporary Czech and foreign children’s and young adults’ literature 2. be knowledgeable in axiological criteria for an assessment of the contemporary literary output for children and young adults 3. interpret chosen literary pieces of the contemporary Czech children’s and young adults’ literature that represent new developmental trends
Syllabus
  • 1. New tendencies in the development of the contemporary children’s and young adults’ literature (a permeability of bounds between literature for children, young adults and adults, new reading categories, a permeation of texts and images, merging of genres, and others). 2. Up to date activities connected with children’s books. 3. Interpretation of chosen contemporary literary pieces intended for children and young adults. 4. Changes in children’s attitudes to literature. 5. Changes in a conception of children’s and young adults’ literature on account of contemporary Czech and foreign literary research.

Teaching methods
During classes (consultations in a form of lectures), students will develop their knowledge of literary studies and also their interpretation skills; they will be given an opportunity to discuss introduced issues and perceive them in a wider social context. Explanations will be accompanied with PP presentations with rich visuals and direct work with literary texts, which will contribute to the development of students’ competences in literary criticism.
Assessment methods
Credit. Credit requirements – students are obliged to participate actively in classes and hand in a written reflection of one of the presented topics on the basis of their own reading (in the extent of 2–3 pages).
