Course objectives
At the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. identify main tendencies and layers of the Czech prose of 21st century, 2. interpret chosen literary pieces of the contemporary Czech prose that rank among crucial works appreciated by both Czech and foreign critics, 3. characterize the style of outstanding Czech male and female prose writers of the period.
Syllabus
  • 1. perception of the contemporary Czech prose (the view on systematizing studies and critical reflexions of crucial literary pieces), 2. outstanding personalities of the contemporary Czech prose, and their style (basic features of their poetics), 3. interpretation of chosen prosaic pieces written by Czech authors, namely in the field of novel, novelized and short story output.

Teaching methods
Consultations and seminars. During consultations and seminars, students will develop their knowledge of literary history and literary studies and also their interpretation skills; a discussion about issues of contemporary prose on the basis of their own reading.
Assessment methods
Credit. Credit requirements – students are obliged to participate actively in classes and hand in a seminar paper: critical review of a chosen contemporary Czech novel or short story collection, published as a book after 2000.
