Course objectives

Course description:dr. Kudrnáč: The basic introduction to the literature of the field; literary groups of the Czech fin de sičcle; the ante-war generation or the "generation of rebels"; the role of the 1914 Almanac; poetism in its relations to other literary schools; psychological prose of the nineteen thirties and before; drama from the end of the nineteenth century to the nineteen forties; the birth of the Czech literary criticism at the turn of the twentieth century and its further development; the innovative and traditional tendencies in historical prose; important expressionistic authors; the poetic schools of the nineteen thirties and forties.
mgr. Nováková: The seminar will deal with prose, poetry and literary criticism from the eighteen nineties to the nineteen forties. It will focus not only on key works and main tendencies of Czech literature of the period but will mention some "neglected" authors as well. Some authors to be dealt with: Otokar Březina, Jakub Deml, Bohuslav Reynek, Jan Zahradníček, Václav Renč, V. Prokůpek and J. Knap, František Křelina, Jan Čep, Karel Schulz, Jaroslav Durych, and Egon Hostovský of the 1940s.
The course will deal with some chapters of the Czech literature between World Wars and after 1945.

• Mgr. Portl: expresionismus (B. Reynek, L. Klíma); Prague German literature (M. Brod, F. Kafka); psychological novel (J. Havlíček, K. J. Beneš); Karel Čapek and noetic trilogy; socialist realism; literature in prison (J. Zahradníček, K. Pecka); underground in 1950s; Czech society of 1950s in the Czech literature (I. Klíma, L. Vaculík, M. Kundera); exile experiences (J. Škvorecký, V. Třešňák)
