Course objectives
The course deals with lesser-known ethnic groups and peoples of the ancient Mediterranean world. These tiny civilization, often the first rivals of future ancient greats civilisatin are often neglected by sources, or they do not pay enough attention. Thanks to archaeological research, we know that their neglect was not always deserved. The course aims to introduce students to these nations from archaeological point of view and to acquaint them with their material culture, history, society, architecture, religion, etc.
Syllabus
  • Topics: 1) Small nations living in Italy and the Alps - Veneti, Faliscan people, Osci, etc. 2.) The Sicily, Sardinia and Islands - Sicani, Sicels, Elymians, Nuragic civilization, etc. 3) Tribes and minor civilizations of North Africa - Berbers, Numidian civilization, etc. 4.) The lesser known nations of Greece and the Balkans - Dacians, Thracians, Illyrians, etc. 5) Middle Eastern nations - Lydians, Phrygians, Carians, etc.
