Course objectives
Having completed the course, a student will be able to explain the role of the State Security in enforcing the policy of the communist party in Czechoslovakia and incorparate the issue into a broader context of contemporary Czechoslovakian history.
Syllabus
  • - Primary sources and their interpretation (archival documents and oral history - Birth of the State Security in 1945 and basic terminology (intelligence, operativa, agentura) - Situation of the security and intelligence apparatus 1945-1947 - The role of intelligence services in the coup of 1948 - State Security between 1948 and 1953 - Secret collaborators - Investigation - A trial with the communists in the security aparatus - Personality of a member of State Security – typical features - Personality of a member of State Security – an example of a career - Czechoslovakian external intelligence - The attempts of criminal sanction against State Security members in 1968 and after 1990
