Course objectives

At the end of the course students should be able to understand of the main works of the Art Nouveau and to outline their actual interpretations. The course is ordered according to artistic tasks, for beside a visual form, the function of art production in the age of fin-de-siecle, its reforming orientation and other culture-historical circumstances.

Syllabus

• 1. Art Nouveau: definition of the term and an actual dimension of the study; 2. Arts and Crafts Movement and a new status of applied arts; 3. The Art Nouveau visual culture: periodisation and main centres; 4. Centre and province: artistic exchange; 5. Artist, spectator, critic: exhbitions and the art market; 6. „To reveal secrets of the soul“: genre, allegory, symbol; 7. Posters, books and journals; 8. Residential and civic buildings; 9. Sacred buildings, memorial and tomb monuments; 10. Excursion „Art Nouveau in Brno“; 11. „Colours, tones, sounds“: between fine arts, music and literature; 12. Conclusion. The biographies of the following artists will be included in lectures: Aubrey Beardsley, Fernand Khnopff, Odilon Redon, Stanisław Wyspiański, Antoni Gaudí, Otto Wagner, František Bílek, Jaroslav Panuška, Dušan Jurkovič, Jan Kotěra and Emil Králík.
