Course objectives
The aim of this course is to make students acquainted with the backgrounds of determinants in grammar studies and with the basis of normative grammar approach. Students should be able to define basic grammar terms. When analyzing particular texts and exercises, he or she should be able to apply these terms and deduce from the observed phenomena the proper conclusions. At the end of this course, students will be able to deduce and explain the rules of basic grammatic phenomena, namely the functions of determinants in context, and identify the deviations from the standard. He or she will be able justify and bring serious arguments to support his or her thesis. Eventually, he or she will be able to propose a solution in accord with the standard.

  • Mmorphosyntax of determinants:
  • a) Articles - define, undefine, partitive, "zero", repeating of articles, articles preceedings common names
  • b) Other mandatory determinants
  • c) Facultative determinants - dependant pronouns

Teaching methods
Lecture: exposition and definitions of basic terms and their exemplification on different types of specific texts, proceeding from diverse registers. Seminar: application of theoretical knowledge on authentic texts and exercises. During their presentations students show their ability to interconnect on their own their theoretical knowledge and practical analysis of a specific text.
Assessment methods
Students could obtain final result only if the participate actively in course, attendance is required (80%). During hole semester, students prepare a seminar work and in the end, there is as written test (minimum: 60% of achievement), where students show their ability to analyze and explain phenomena in accordance (or in conflict) with the standard. In irresolute cases the teacher can discuss with the student the presentation of their seminar work. Student získává nárok na zápočet za aktivní účast v semináři (80%) a po úspěšném absolvování testu (úspěšnost 60%), kde prokazuje schopnost rozebrat a zdůvodnit jevy, které jsou, anebo nejsou v souladu s normou. V nerozhodných případech může vyučující studenta požádat také o doplňkový pohovor nad prezentací seminární práce, kterou studenti vypracují během semestru.
