Bezpodmínečným předpokladem zapsání kurzu je alespoň pasivní znalost němčiny nebo maďarštiny. Znalost latiny je vítána, většina latinských textů ovšem bude k dispozici též v českém či německém překladu.

Course objectives
The course leavers will be able to characterize the personality of the last ruler of the Luxembourg dynasty, the Hungarian, Roman and Bohemian king Sigismund, in the context of the European history at the end of the 14th and in the first half of the 15th century, describe Sigismund’s life on the background of significant events and processes of European and Czech history and interpret diplomatic and particularly narrative sources of the Hungarian, imperial and Czech origin.
Syllabus
  • 1 – literature and sources, course requirements
  • 2 – childhood of Sigismund at the court of Charles IV, education of emperor’s sons and relevant literary works
  • 3–4 – Sigismund as an object of father’s dynastic policy, attempt by Charles IV to gain a share in the Angevin-Piast inheritance
  • 5–6 – Sigismund’s struggle for the Hungarian Crown in 1382–1387, political system in Hungary and increasing power of the Hungarian nobility
  • 7 – beginnings of the rule in Hungary, Turkish expansion in the Balkans, first crusade and Battle of Nicopolis
  • 8 – Sigismund’s intervention in Luxembourg inner-dynastic arguments and in domestic wars in Bohemia and Moravia
  • 9 – uprising against Sigismund in Hungary and its suppression
  • 10 – reforms of the Kingdom of Hungary in the first dacade of the 15th century
  • 11 – 12 – double election to the Roman king in 1410 and 1411, political system in the empire at the beginning of the 15th century

Teaching methods
Every lesson will be based on a 30–60 minute lecture followed by reading and interpretation of passages selected from primary sources.
Assessment methods
Course requirements: active participation in the course and writing a 5–10 page paper on the issue of Sigismund’s rule in Bohemia and his Hussite policy.
