Bezpodmínečným předpokladem zapsání kurzu je alespoň pasivní znalost němčiny nebo maďarštiny. Znalost latiny je vítána, většina latinských textů ovšem bude k dispozici též v českém či německém překladu.

Course objectives
The course leavers will be able to characterize the personality of the last ruler of the Luxembourg dynasty, the Hungarian, Roman and Bohemian king Sigismund, in the context of the European history at the end of the 14th and in the first half of the 15th century, describe Sigismund’s life on the background of significant events and processes of European and Czech history and interpret diplomatic and particularly narrative sources of the Hungarian, imperial and Czech origin.
Syllabus
  • 1 – big war between Poland and the Teutonic Knights, Battle of Grunwald and Sigismund’s role in peace negotiations
  • 2 – war against Venetia, political situation in Italy and the Mediterranean at the beginning of the 15th century
  • 3 – preparation and summoning the Council of Constance, Sigismund’s role as a protector of the church
  • 4 – trial of Hus at the Council and Sigismund’s role, beginnings of formation of Sigismund’s party in the Czech lands and loss of confidence in the Hussite environment
  • 5 – intermediary diplomatic mission to Aragon, France and England, Sigismund’s participation in the ending of the schism and his efforts to make peace between England and France
  • 6 – end of the schism, election of Martin V, Sigismund’s unsuccessful attempt to put forward a church reform and development of his Czech policy until 1419
  • 7 – accession to the throne in Bohemia, first and second crusade against Hussites
  • 8 – changes in Sigismund’s Czech policy in 1422–1430, Sigismund’s difficulties in the empire and at the Turkish front
  • 9 – beginnings of negotiations with the Hussites, emperor’s coronation and preparation of the Council of Basel
  • 10 – negotiations between the Council and the Hussites on the Compactata, Sigismund’s intermediary role
  • 11 – declaration of the Compactata and acceptance of Sigismund as king of Bohemia
  • 12 – Sigismund’s short rule in Prague in 1436–1437, arduous modus vivendi with the Estates and pacification of the rest of the revolt

Teaching methods
Every lesson will be based on a 30–60 minute lecture followed by reading and interpretation of passages selected from primary sources.
Assessment methods
Course requirements: active participation in the course and writing a 5–10 page paper on the issue of Sigismund’s rule in Bohemia and his Hussite policy.
