Course objectives
This course looks at papal centralism and fiscalism in the 14th and 15th centuries, the milestones in their development and their impact on the pre-Hussite, Hussite and post-Hussite Czech lands. Specific styles of documents will be examined which were produced by papal centralism, and attention will be placed on both the possibilities and limits in interpretation that arise from them. Students will prepare specific texts which will then be discussed in the seminars. At the end of the course one of the more complicated cases will be reconstructed – the dispute over the beneficium before the Court of Rome.
