Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize the students with classical Greek comedy and its reception. They will be introduced into the historical and cultural context of classical drama and its performance with special regard to the New Comedy both in Greece (Menander) and Rome (Plautus, Terence), and its second life (Shakespeare, Molière, Klicpera, Figueiredo). The texts of the plays will be examined from literary as well as theatrical perspective (i.e. mise-en-scéne, costumes, music, etc.). Knowledge of Greek and Latin not required.
