Course objectives

Main objectives of the course can be summarized as follows:
- to understand primary texts of medieval secular lyrics, its language, poetics and content
- to get acquainted with Carmina Burana as the most important and best known collection of the poetry of this kind (necessary if one wants to become familiar with this literary genre)

• The following texts will be examined (after intensive individual preparation):

Assessment methods

Individual home reading. Credit: students should prove their ability to understand the text (the language as well as the content), to translate it and to read rhythmic poetry (vagant strophe etc.)

Výše v oddíle "Literatura" uveden (vlastně jen pro informaci o základní edici) pouze jeden svazek edice Hilka-Schumann, existují další svazky! Čteme spíše z dvojjazyčného (lat.-něm.) přetisku textu této edice s poznámkami a kritickým komentářem, který doplnil B. Bischoff, překlad C. Fischer, pozn. a doslov G. Berndt, Mnichov 1979, 5. vyd. 1991.

Although there is only one fascicle of the Hilka-Schuman edition presented in the above section "Literature" (to infrom students about this basic edition), other fascicles of the edition exist! Students should rather use the bilingual (latin-german) reprint of this edition with comments and a critical commentary (completed by B. Bischoff, translated by C. Fischer, comments and epilogue by G. Berndt): Munich 1979, 5th ed. 1991.
