Course objectives
A qualifying exam after the first year of the B.A. study. The student should be able to:
reproduce grammatical rules and paradigms studied within the course (vide syllabus of the course);
use basic Latin grammatical terminology associated with the grammar studied within the course;
apply grammatical rules in translating sentences into Latin and into Czech;
describe the grammatical structure of a clause and distinguish morphological and syntactic devices used in the sentence;
use synonymous expressive means to express selected grammatical phenomena;
record selected Latin vocabulary (with emphasis on verbs);
translate selected texts from Caesar's Commentarii de bello Gallico;
identify the grammatical features studied in Latin grammar courses in the text and explain them.
Syllabus
  • Prerequisities of the qualifying exam:
  • Active knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar as exposed in: Antonín Bartoňek, Latina pro posluchače filozofické fakulty, Brno 1991 and František Novotný, Základní latinská mluvnice, Praha 1957, including the irregular verbs. Integral part of the exam is the reading of Caesar: Commentationes de bello Gallico: 1st, 4th, 6th book.
  • Familiarity with the Greek literature to the extent of the History of the Classical Literature I and II, knowledge of the Roman literature to the extent of Overview of Roman Literature; selected chapters from Dějin řecké literatury by L. Canfora and Dějin Římské literatury by G.B.Conte are also recommended.

Teaching methods
Homework, completion of requirements for the classes of Latin grammar II and Reading Caesaar.
Assessment methods
The qualifying exam consists of a written part (test in Latin grammar) and oral part (translation of the passage of Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic War - 1st, 4th and 6th book and theoretical knowledge of the grammatical rules).

General note: Podmínkou pro klasifikaci v tomto předmětu je úspěšné absolvování "Přehledu římské literatury". V případě, že student zmíněný předmět neukončí, bude součástí postupové zkoušky také zkouška z literatury.
