Knowledge of Latin to the extent of the B. A. State Exam. The exam itself is not required for the enrollment to the course.

Course objectives
Main objectives of the course can be summarized as follows:
- to understand the text of Peter Abaelard, Planctus, and to interpret the verses read during the sessions;
- to read and analyze the metrics;
- to translate the poems with respect to the poetics of the texts; texts of the Old Testament as the models for "planctus".

  • 1. Introduction - Latin poetry of medieval Europe with special regard to the 11th and 12th centuries; literary and spiritual context
  • 2. Peter Abaelard, life and work
  • 3. Poetry of Peter Abaelard - hymns, Planctus, Carmen ad Astralabium
  • 4. Consecutive reading and interpretation of six poems of Planctus

Seminar. Credit: Active class participation (class discussion). Proving the ability to translate and interpret the texts.
