Course objectives
In a compact seminar, consisting of fine thematic units, Jan Čulík, Senior Lecturer in Czech Studies at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, will discuss selected works by Karel Čapek from an intercultural point of view. The seminar will address the questions of motivation of Čapek´s work, its roots and its message. Since the bi-polar division of the world has ended with the fall of communism in 1989 and we have returned to a world of competing multipolar interests, the seminar will consider to which extent Čapek's political and social analysis of his era has regained topicality.
