Course objectives
The aim of the course is the interpretation of the North Atlantic Alliance in connection with the security architecture of Europe. The course is mainly focused on the clarification of the historical circumstances of the creation of NATO, organizational structures, decision-making mechanisms and changes of the North Atlantic Alliance in the context of the end of the bipolarity. The course touches other security institutions in Europe as well, especially Western European Union and newly also the process of building an ESDP within the European Union.
Course objectives: to understand the functioning principles of NATO, to learn the historical evolution of NATO, to define main differences between NATO and other security organizations, and to understand current trends in the development of NATO.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction into the study, presentations, study literature. Security and security policy, development and reflection, basic terminology.
  • 2. Historical circumstances of the emergence of NATO. The emergence and evolution of NATO.
  • 3. Institutional structure and decision-making mechanism of NATO.
  • 4. Rebellion of France.
  • 5. The creation, evolution and disappearance of the Warsaw Pact.
  • 6. NATO's strategic concepts.
  • 7. Transformations of the Alliance in the new strategic environment, relationship towards Central and Eastern Europe.
  • 8. NATO and the Czech Republic.
  • 9. The Alliance and crisis regions.
  • 10. Trends in the development of military capabilities of NATO.
  • 11. Credited discussion, presentation and defense of presentations about NATO which were not presented to the given topic I.
  • 12. Presentation and defense of presentations about NATO which were not presented to the given topic II.
  • 13. Consultations to the written test.

Assessment methods
The course is completed by an examination. To pass the examination, it is necessary to present or hand over a presentation, to elaborate an essay, and pass a written test (with the success rate of 60 % points) on the compulsory literature and the presented matter. Teaching methods: lectures, study of literature, elaboration and presentation of a presentation, elaboration of an essay.
