- Course objectives
- main objectives of lecture: understanding the concept of scientific knowledge, demarcation of its limits, possibilities and utilisation. mastering critical approach in science with respect to its epistemological & social aspects.
- Syllabus
- 1. repeatable phenomenon as an acquired knowledge : fundamental to science; universe, reality, truth
- 2. cognition as a process of acquiring knowledge : biological adaptation; mind and its functioning
- 3. epistemology as a science on acquiring knowledge : basic concepts of methodical knowledge acquisition
- 4. methodics of knowledge acquisition : assumptions, empiricism, hypothesis and its testing, generalisation
- 6. science as a reliable knowledge : science in contrast – pseudo-science and anti-science
- 7. science as a set of methodically organised findings : paradigm and its development
- 8. science as a socio-cultural phenomenon : ethics of science

- Teaching methods
- the lecture is based on ppt presentation, its explication and discussion to this explication. presentation it-self will be available as a study material (black-and-white printable pdf with high resolution and restricted access rights). it is recommended to attend the lecture, because of the explication, which significantly extends the presentation.
- Assessment methods
- a student will be evaluated based on an essay, containing elaboration of one of the following topics: i) critical epistemological analysis of a chosen scientific publication in an extent of research article or a chapter, ii) analysis and formulation of the scientific problem in a frame of an ongoing thesis (hypothesising, testing, evaluation), iii) epistemological analysis of a border (testability limits) scientific problem
