Course objectives
The optionial course offers a basic geographic, economic, social and cultural characteristics of the Polish regions (voivodeships). The course provides an introduction to Polish life and institutions as well as to the development and cultural and social specifics of each region. Students will be able to explain, analyze and compare situation and specifics of the Polish voivodeships.
Syllabus
  • The territory of Poland for a better orientation we will divide - considering historical tradition, but also current administrative division of the country - into the six basic macro-regions:
  • 1. Pomerania (present-day West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Pomeranian Voivodeship, Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship)
  • 2. Greater Poland (Greater Poland Voivodeship, Lubusz Voivodeship)
  • 3. Silesia (Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Opole Voivodeship, Silesian Voivodeship)
  • 4. Lesser Poland (Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Subcarpathian Voivodeship, Lublin Voivodeship, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship)
  • 5. Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship
  • 6. Masovia and Podlasie (Masovian Voivodeshop, Łódź Voivodeship, Podlaskie Voivodeship)

Teaching methods
Lectures are combined with class discussion, reading of texts, presentation skills (students are expected to complete an obligatory in-class presentation). Compulsory work with the e-learning environment of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University (ELF).
Assessment methods
Assessment: participation (min. 70 %), obligatory presentation and seminar paper, final test (multiple-choice, student needs to score a minimum 65 % of possible points to pass).
