Course objectives
At the course students should be able to understand and explain development of the electoral systems in the European Post-Communist countries, to learn the most important trends in the research and development of these systems and to analyse elections and electoral systems on the examples of the Post-Communist Europe

  • 1. Electoral systems of the Post-Communist coutries and their research 2. Development in the Czech Republic and Slovakia 3. Development in Poland, Hungary and Slovenia 4. Electoral systems in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia 5. Research of the electoral systems in the Central Europe 6. Electoral systems in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine 7. Development in the Western Balkans I. (Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro) 8. Development in the Western Balkans II. (Serbia, Macedonia, Albania) 9. Other Post-Communist countries (Romania, Bulgary, Moldova) 10. Research of the electoral systems in the Eastern and South-Eastern Europe 11. Elections in the multi-level perspective I. - European elections in the Post-Communist countries 12. Elections in the multi-level perspective II. - European elections in the Post-Communist countries Class resources are available to students through Masaryk University’s online Information System (IS). Teaching methods
The course is mostly conducted through lectures.
Assessment methods
Two written seminar papers (shorter - description of the elections - maximum 5 points, longer - analysis of the electoral system or other analytical topic - maximum 15 points) and final written test - maximum 20 points. It is necessary to get at least 25 points.
