Prerequisites
B1-level English knowledge (Placement test during Consultation 1). The B1-level student can understand the main ideas of texts on both concrete and abstract topics and can discuss the topics related to his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with partners without strain for either party. Can produce an essay on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Course objectives
The B2-level course in English is designed to develop both productive and receptive language skills of the student. The student will be able to analyze and comprehend special texts related to the social spheres, listen, discuss and write about advantages and disadvantages of particular social issues.
Syllabus
  • Consultation 1: Course introduction + Placement TEST. Hot social issues - Immigration; Current websites on the issue. HW I: Two Reading analysis worksheets on Immigration and/or Ethnic minority issues; HW II: Essay 1 (250 words on Immigration. Expressing opinion).
  • Consultation 2: Hot social issues of today. Immigration. Ethnic minorities. Multiculturalism. Racism. HW I: Two Reading analysis worksheets on Addiction. HW II: Text - Problem Addiction. HW III Essay 2 (250 words on Problem Addiction)
  • Consultation 3: Problem addictions. Text - Problem addiction. Drug abuse. Work with addicts. Prevention; HW: Two Reading analysis worksheets on Hot Social Issues of Today
  • Consultation 4: Social issues of today. Interpersonal relations - Men and women. Gender issues.
  • Consultation 5:Social issues of today. Un/employment. Family relationships. Single-parent families. Foster care. HW: Reading analysis worksheets (2); HW: Reading analysis worksheets
  • FINAL TEST -
  • 1) WRITTEN part: Electronic test on PC. Listening comprehension, reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar, word-formation. Writing - expressing opinion in writing. Total: 70 marks. Pass mark: 45
  • 2) ORAL part:
  • a Monologue (1-minute talk about the Student's Work and Field of Study) b)Dialogue (6-minute discussion of two students on a particular topic) Total: 30 marks; Pass mark = 20

Teaching methods
Seminars. E-learning. Home assignments. In-class discussions. Inductive and deductive methods. Critical thinking. Projects - three special text analysis (submitted in reading comprehension worksheets).
Assessment methods
Examination requirements:
1) Active participation during the in-class discussions (1 class can be missed during the semester)
2) In-term assignments submitted in due time (Six (3x2) Reading worksheets; 2 essays (250 words each)
3) Final e-test in a computer room (total = 70 marks, pass limit = 45). Listening, reading, vocabulary and grammar, writing.
4) Oral part of the examination
a) Monologue (1-minute talk about the student's work and field of study) b) Dialogue (6-minute discussion of two students on a particular topic). Total: 30 marks; Pass mark = 20

A=100-93, B=92-86, C=85-79, D=78-72, E=71-65

General note: Předmět je vyučován v angličtině a je zakončen testem na PC (na úrovni B2) a ústní zkouškou ve dvojicích.

Information on course enrolment limitations: Kurz na úrovni B2 (ERR). Znalosti angličtiny se prověřují vstupním testem na úvodní konzultaci. Předmět si zapíší pouze ti studenti, kteří úspěšně absolvovali vstupní test.
