Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide a survey of the development of the Slovenian literature since the beginnings of the Slavonic written culture to the end of the 18th century. The characteristics of the dominant styles, genres, tendencies and creative methods is based on the contextual analysis of the most significant works of the Slovenian literature of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque and Enlightenment. Slovenian literature is examined in the context of the domestic as well as European historical and cultural developments. The seminar is based on the intensive home reading and the analysis of relevant texts. On successful completion of the course student will acquire knowledge of several epochs of the development of Slovenian literature and he will deepen his skill to analyse and interpret a literary text.
Syllabus
  • 1. Main periods in Slovene literature of the Middle Ages, cultural and historical context. 2. First Slovene manuscripts: Brižinski spomeniki, Stiški, Rateški rokopis. 3. Slovene literary folkloristic: first poetry and tales. 4. Reformation and anti-reformation. 5. Main personalities of the Slovene reformation. 6. Baroque in Slovenia. The development of prose. 7. The development of baroque poetry and drama. 8. Cultural and historical context of classicism. 9. Anton Tomaž Linhart. 10. Valentin Vodnik and pre-romantic elements in his poetry. 11. Historical ideas of the period. Conclusion.

Assessment methods
Credit requirements: written test at the end of the semester (minimum pass level 65 %), home reading, regular attendance (min. 70 %).
