Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide a brief outline of the development of the Slovene literature after the World War II. The characteristics of the dominant styles, genres, tendencies and creative methods is based on the contextual analysis of the most significant works of the period. Slovene literature is examined in the context of the domestic as well as European historical and cultural developments. The seminar is based on the intensive home reading and the individual as well as collective analysis of the relevant texts. On successful completion of the course student will acquire knowledge of the contemporary Slovene literature and he will deepen his skill to analyse and interpret a literary text.
Syllabus
  • 1. A brief outline of the history of Slovene poetry after 1945. The poetry of so-called intimism. Existentialism in the Slovene literature. Modernism and postmodernism in Slovene poetry.
  • 2. A brief outline of the history of Slovene prose after 1945. The communist ideology in literature. The theme of War and after War traumas. New models of prose in the 1950´s and 1960´s. Slovene prose in Italy and Austria. Slovene postmodernism and so-called young prose of 1990´s.
  • 3. A brief outline of the development of Slovene drama after 1945. The theatre of the absurd. Experimental theatre. Political drama. Postmodern theatre.
  • 4. Slovene literary criticism after 1945. Famous critics and essayists.
  • 5. Slovene literature in the 21th century.
  • 6. Relations between Czech and Slovene literature, translations and the most famous translators.

Assessment methods
Compulsory written test (max. 40 points, required score: min. 21 points) and facultative oral exam (max. 10 points). Home reading, seminar paper (max. 10 points) and active participation are required.
