In the compulsorily-optional English for Social Educators A, the students will consolidate their language skills from secondary school, and will learn some selected academic skills (oral presentation, supporting an argument ) in English. Successful students will be credited for active participation in the lessons, for oral and written presentations and for passing the Credit Test at the end of the semester.

Course objectives

  • WEEKS 1-4 EDUCATION IN THE CR AND THE UK PRIMARY, SECONDARY AND TERTIARY EDUCATION Texts on education, similarities and differences Being a university student in the UK - practical information STUDY SKILLS: listening, reading, discussion based on experience, expressing an opinion, making a statement ACADEMIC SKILLS: key words, summarising, basic reading techniques, mini-presentation GRAMMAR: present simple, continuous; past simple, continuous WEEKS 5-7 BODY LANGUAGE. NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION Text on the iportance of non-verbal communication. Pictures with facial expressions and body postures. STUDY SKILLS: discussion, opinion exchange, supporting arguments, observing and describing pictures, ACADEMIC SKILLS - dialogues and arguments GRAMMAR: present simple, continuous; past simple, continuous WEEKS 8-10 INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS FAMILY CONSTELLATIONS WHEN I AM 40 (mini-presentation) WHEN I WAS 14 (mini-presentation) STUDY SKILLS: giving and supporting arguments, comparing similarities and differences, still images and role-plays GRAMMAR: future, past, present perfect WEEKS 11-13 PROBLEMS IN INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS (unwanted pregnancy and its consequences) PSYCHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT (understanding responsibility and consequences of one´s actions) STUDY SKILLS - discussion, opinion exchange, supporting arguments, role-play, teacher-in-role, character on the wall, alley of conscience, improvisation ACADEMIC SKILLS - summarising, keywords, expressing opinion GRAMMAR: 1st and 2nd conditionals Credit requirements: Long term tasks: Portfolio: reading comprehesion sheets based on the texts and topics from the lessons (Education, When I am 40, When I was 14, Human development) Written test (listening, reading, writing) Oral exam (continuous assessment: oral mini-presentations in the lessons) The student who has not completed continuous assessment during the particular semester can not be credited!

The English Language Course for Intermediate Students (Level B1). Continuous work and assessment during the semester (oral presentations, written assignments, etc.) Credit requirements: Oral and written tasks during the semester. The field presentation based on the special task. Written test (part A - grammar, part B - topics)
