SV4BP_1AB1 English A
A pass in SV4BP_1AB1. The intermediate student (Level B1) can understand the main ideas of texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including special discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with partners without strain for either party. Can produce a mini-essay on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Course objectives
The student will learn and deepen vocabulary and grammar (level B1) as well as selected academic skills (oral presentations, discussions, presenting and justifying the point, etc.) on particular social topics in English.
Syllabus
  • SV4BP_2AB1 Cizí jazyk B - jazyk anglický;
  • Weeks 1-3 'Stress and Its Consequences. Healthy x Unhealthy Lifestyles. HRW 1 – web article on stress (to Odevzd. by 27.9.)
  • Weeks 4–6 'Current Problems in Czech Schools (bullying, truancy, addictions, etc.). HRW 2 – web article on school problems (by 4.10.). Essay - 'How can educators motivate their students to a better academic performance? (to Odevzd by 11.10.)
  • Weeks 7–9 'Current Social Issues' (gender, race, cultural differences, ethnic minorities, immigration, politics, economy, etc.). HRW3 - web article on a hot social issue (by 25.10)
  • Weeks 10–13 'My Field of Study' (in-class presentations). PPT presentation (Introducing oneself. Hot issues of my field of study. My undergraduate project. Two questions for the class discussion). To be uploaded to Odevzd by 8.11.2014. The presentation may be video recorded and archived in IS.MUNI.CZ
  • Study and academic skills – presenting the point, arguments based on experience, problem solving, justifying the point, discussion. Grammar revision: tenses, conditional sentences, countables, uncountables, modal verbs, active/passive voice.
  • Presentation language and skills, building specialized vocabulary – presentations and professional language, power point presentation.

Seminars, practical language lessons, group discussions, critical thinking, reading and speaking, home assignments, presentations.
Assessment methods
Examination requirements:
The students will have to comply with the course requirements (active participation in the class required - only 2 classes can be missed), complete oral and written assignments, pass final end-of-the-term test (pass limit 65%) and oral examination on selected topics in pairs (level B1). a) Active participation in practical lessons during the semester b) Completed written assignments (2 essays, 3HRWs, 1 presentation) plus in-class discussions; A student who will not fulfil the above stated requirements will not be admitted to sit the final test! A) Final test on PC – (maximum 75 marks, 65% pass). B) Oral examination (monologue: 1 minute, dialogue: 5 minutes) - maximum 25 marks, 65% pass) Final grade: Grade A (100-93 marks), Grade B (92-86), Grade C (85-79), Grade D (78-72), Grade E (71-65 marks).
