Prerequisites
B1 level knowledge of English is required. The pre-intermediate student (B1) understands the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters. Can enter unprepared into conversation about familiar topics and connect ideas in a simple way. Can provide information, take messages, give simple instructions and deal with less routine problems, e.g. complaints. Can describe events, experiences, hopes and ambitions; give reasons, explanations of plans and opinions.

Course objectives
By means practically-oriented topics, students will develop all receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking, writing) language skills together with their grammar and vocabulary awarness within B2 level. Course objectives: 1) acquiring fundamental terminology related to the student's qualification/field of study(business English,technical English, English linked to providing services, English for special needs educators) and vocabulary related to a professional career; 2) B2 level grammar practice; 3) enhancing language skills (R, L, S, W); 4) practising presentation skills.
Syllabus
  • Consultation 1 Entrance B1 test. Where do you work? (Discussing advantages and disadvantages of various professions. Speaking about the present/future job.) A company structure and profile. (Learning vocabulary describing staff and business activities of companies.)
  • Consultation 2 Business meetings. Negotiations. Sales contracts. Dealing with clients. (Language of suggestions, small talk, negotiating…)
  • Consultation 3 Business trips. Itineraries. (Planning a business trip/itinerary. Practising situational language: Travel and travel problems. Eating out.)
  • Consultation 4 Problem solving. Workplace safety.
  • Consultation 5 On the phone. Writing a formal (business) letter. (Practising simple phone conversation and writing a formal letter.) Oral presentations.

Teaching methods
Consultations in the form of seminars designed for teaching English for specific and academic purposes (acitvities developing students' awarness of language skills and systems within B2 level - independent reading and listening tasks; grammar and vocabulary practice, discussions and presentations, e-learning for grammar and vocabulary practice etc.
Assessment methods
Level B2 language course. Credit requirements: 1) Attendance and active participation in consultations (one absence due to serious reasons is acceptable). 2) Completed assigned units/grammar exercises. 3) Oral presentation. 4) Meeting deadlines. 5) Final test (listening, reading, use of English, writing, terminology).
