Prerequisites
The English course for intermediate students who can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc., who can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest, and can read texts and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Course objectives
In the compulsorily-optional English as a Foreign Language Course A, the students will consolidate their language skills from secondary school (Pass in 'maturita' in English is required), and will learn some selected academic skills (oral presentation, supporting argument, discussion, etc.) in English. Successful students will be credited for active participation in the lessons, for oral and written presentations, incl. summary presentation at the end of the semester.

  • SZ7BP_1AB1 Cizí jazyk A - jazyk anglický Weeks 1-4 Education in the Czech Republic compared with the U.K. and U.S. systems. Texts 1, 2, 3. (Making a statement, arguing the point, discussion based on experience) Weeks 5-7 Growing up, growing old. Adolescence. Adulthood. Ageing. Text 12.(Opinion exchange. Critical thinking. Essay writing). Texts 4, 5, 6. Weeks 8-10 21st century problems - environment, drug abuse, terrorism, racism, etc. Texts 8, 9, 10. (Survey. Presentation. Problem solving.) Weeks 11-12 Healthy lifestyle. Mind, body, health and sports. Texts 12, 13. (Personal experience and reflection. Weeks 1-12 Weeks 13-14 Credit presentations Special task: My field of study. (Previous studies, basic information on MU and Faculty of Education, my field of study, hot issues and current resources in my study at Faculty of Education) Credit requirements: Oral and written presentations during the semester. Plus the end-of-the-term summary presentation based on the special task. The student who has not completed continuous assessment during the particular semester can not be credited! (Student, který nemá splněné průběžné úkoly z jednotlivých témat v rámci daného semestru, nemůže získat kredity, ani zápočet!)

Assessment methods (in Czech)
Practical language course. Oral presentations. End-of-semester presentation. Pro ukončení předmětu jsou předepsány v semestru průběžné kontroly (ustni prezentace, pisemne ukoly, atd.), jejichž výsledky jsou započítávány do závěrečného hodnocení. Student, který nemá splněné průběžné úkoly z jednotlivých témat v rámci daného semestru, nemůže získat kredity, ani zápočet!
