Course objectives
This course is loosely related to the course “A General History of the Early Modern Age – European Absolutist State and Society”. It will examine issues of life in the Baroque court, prinicpally in Central Europe and in France. Specific issues will be looked at through the reading of primary sources with attempts at their interpretation. From this there will develop further analyses of issues, which will be looked at in the wider context of contemporary research.
The basic areas of research will be the structure and composition of the absolutist court, ceremonies and other ostentatious displays of the Baroque court, the economic and personal provision of the court, the behaviour of the travelling court, the court’s function in the running of the state, the court gentry and the landed gentry.
