Course objectives
Students will be acquainted with the specificities of vocal and instrumental polyphonies in the renaissance and baroque music. Basic techniques: imitation, proportion, modality etc. Basic forms: canon, motet, madrigal, passacaglia, fugue etc.

Introduction to counterpoint: basic terminology
Prerequisites: intervals and modes - their classification
Techniques of the cantus firmus: 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 3:1, 6:1 and syncopic counterpoint
Imitation techniques: typology
Contrapuntal figures
Instrumental techniques: free and reversed counterpoint
